The Allurion Balloon is a soft balloon placed in your stomach. It is the first gastric balloon that requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anaesthesia for placement or removal.
The balloon is placed within 15 minutes during a short appointment visit and after 16 weeks, the balloon empties and passes naturally.
The balloon takes up space in your stomach and stimulates weight loss by increasing the feeling of constant fullness. This means that you are more likely to lower your food intake throughout the day.
he Allurion Balloon is a 6-month lifestyle comprehensive program customised just for you so results may differ. However, following 16 weeks of the Allurion Program, patients lose an average of 10 to 15% of their total body weight and maintain up to 95% of this weight loss at a 1 year follow-up with help from a dietician and a health tracker linked to the Allurion app.
You simply swallow a small capsule containing the deflated balloon, attached to a thin tube. Once the balloon has reached your stomach, Dr Stephen Watson will conduct an X-ray examination to check the placement. The balloon is then filled with 550ml of water through the catheter. A second X-ray is then carried out to check that the balloon is filled. The entire process takes no more than 15 minutes during an appointment.
Some patients may feel nausea, mild abdominal pain, and vomiting in rare cases after balloon placement. More often than not, these side effects are manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
Following 16 weeks of treatment time, a release valve will open, allowing the balloon to empty and pass naturally through your gastrointestinal tract without the need for a removal procedure. However, in extremely rare cases the empty balloon may be vomited which is nothing to be concerned about.
