Several thousand patients need gallbladder surgery each year in Western Australia. Keyhole gallbladder surgery is today the “gold standard” treatment for gallstones, and whilst this surgery is common, it is still considered major surgery.

What is a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

A keyhole cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. This operation is needed to completely remove the gallbladder suffering from gallstones causing pain or infection. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure is less invasive than open gallbladder procedure as the open procedure involves a much larger incision.

What is the gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small organ in the upper abdomen near your liver. The gallbladder collects and stores the liquid that helps to break down food.

What are gallstones and gallbladder infection?

Gallstones are crystalised fluids that can form in the gallbladder. This can block the flow of bile and therefore cause infection. You might be experiencing gallstones if:

  • You have a fever
  • Are feeling bloated
  • Are feeling nauseous
  • Yellow looking skin
  • Pain in the right side of the abdomen and the back or shoulder
