Single Anastomosis Stomach-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SASI-S)
Single Anastomosis Stomach-Ileal Bypass (SASI-S) is a new weight loss bariatric surgery, which combines the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass.
The surgery removes 75% of the stomach, which is great for weight loss patients as they benefit from eating less and experience less hunger, due to lower levels of ghrelin.
What is SASI-S surgery?
The SASI-S weight loss surgery is a two-step procedure, beginning with a sleeve gastrectomy. The stomach is reduced to a small portion of its original size by surgically removing up to 75% of the stomach. The result of a sleeve gastrectomy is a tube-like stomach structure.
The next step is joining the antrum (lower stomach) to the distal section of the small intestine, the ileum. Bypass length will be determined by the amount of weight loss that is required.
This means that about half of the food will bypass the first part of the small intestine, which will ultimately cause a reduction in the amount of fats, calories and sugars absorbed.
You will also experience less hunger due to the slow digestion of food, which causes the release of intestinal hormones telling you to stop eating.

Is SASI-S weight loss surgery safe?
As with any invasive surgical procedures, there are risks such as bleeding, infection and others.
There are also risks associated with weight loss surgery, such as infection, leaking and malabsorption (dietary supplements will be required).

How much weight can be lost from the SASI-S surgery?
The results of the SASI-S procedure are different for every patient; however, you may be able to lose up to 80-90% excess weight if you follow the instructions of your surgeon and dietician.
Recovery after SASI-S surgery
After your surgery, you will have to spend a few days recovering in hospital. You can expect some pain, however we will administer pain medication to help you.
For the first few weeks post-surgery, you will have to follow a liquid-only diet and take vitamin and mineral supplements, as outlined by your diet plan.
